PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after an 18-year-old man was shot and killed Sunday afternoon in Providence.
The victim was identified Monday as Darmani Balbuena.
Col. Oscar Perez said police were called to Rhodes Street and found Balbuena suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest.
He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Perez said the preliminary investigation showed Balbuena was outside during a gathering when his family heard a gunshot and then found him in their home’s foyer.
“My heart goes out to the family. It’s a tragic loss of an 18-year-old, whose birthday happened to be today,” Perez said. “It’s extremely sad and no family should ever have to go through that type of loss and experience trauma.”
No word on any arrests or what led up to the shooting at this time.
This was the city’s sixth homicide of the year.
