Police said Johnathan Costa, 19, of Cranston, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon in Florida after the stolen sports car was clocked by an automated license plate reader.

His suspected accomplice, 18-year-old Logan Slezak, was arrested in Rhode Island after investigators realized he wasn’t in the car with Costa.

The investigation began early Saturday morning, when officers were called to a home on Crest Drive. The residents told police that two masked men armed with handguns had barged into their home and demanded the keys to their two cars — a Ferrari 488 Spider convertible and a Chevrolet Corvette.

The two suspects hopped into the Ferrari and took off after the owner handed them the keys. Neither of them touched the Corvette, which was found undisturbed where the owner had originally parked it, police added.

“It was clear from the onset that this was not a random act, as the suspects targeted the victims and specific vehicles,” investigators noted.

The stolen Ferrari was spotted by an automatic license plate reader in Cranston the next day, according to police. It wasn’t seen again until Monday evening, when a Rhode Island State Police trooper attempted to pull it over.

The driver refused to stop and instead led officers on a high-speed chase through Rhode Island and into Connecticut. Police said the troopers called off the pursuit after losing sight of the vehicle.

New York State Police also attempted to stop the car later that night, but were unsuccessful.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office tried to pull over the stolen Ferrari on Tuesday, but the driver once again sped off. The car was later tracked to the Palm Coast home where it was found hidden under a tarp.

Costa and Slezak have each been charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony, using a firearm while committing a crime of violence, and conspiracy. Police said Costa will likely face additional charges related to the pursuits he was involved in.
