Western Coventry Fire Chief James Cady told 12 News the first responders had initially been called to a medical emergency on Victory Highway.

He explained that the first responders were getting out of their vehicle when an oncoming car slammed into the truck’s open door and injured both of them.

Cady said one first responder was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with “fairly serious injuries” and the other was brought to Kent Hospital to be checked out.

“I responded when we heard a call over the radio that a member was hit by a vehicle,” Cady said. “Obviously, you think of the worst.”

Cady said the driver didn’t stop and the Coventry Police Department is investigating.
