PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Firefighters rescued two young children from a burning Providence home Monday evening.
Providence Battalion Fire Chief Mark Randall told 12 News that firefighters were first called to Ophelia Street to investigate reports of “fire in a window.”
Firefighters rushed into the building upon learning that the children were trapped inside, he added.
Randall said the children were unconscious when firefighters rescued them from the second floor.
Both kids were brought to Hasbro Children’s Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and are expected to be OK.
“We were all responding as a structure fire. Once you hear a report of people trapped, things get picked up a little bit. Everything speeds up a little quicker,” Randall said. “The guys just did a great job and saved a couple of lives tonight.”
Icy conditions made things tricky for crews on scene, but Randall said they were able to get the fire out in about 40 minutes.
Some pets did die in the fire, according to Randall. It’s unclear how many residents are affected.
The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
