The 4th of July holiday is next week, and there will be plenty of celebrations around Rhode Island.

If you’re feeling particularly patriotic — D. Palmieri’s Bakery in Johnston has just the pizza for you.

Baker Eric Palmieri, who is known for his creative edible creations, said that the while American flag pizza is available throughout the year, it is in particularly high demand for this week’s parties.

“I’ll get some orders on Veterans and Memorial Days, but the 4th is much bigger,” said Palmieri.

Palmieri’s pizza art has included everything from New England sports teams’ logos to famous figures (like Hulk Hogan to Mickey Mouse) — you can see some of his designs on the bakery’s Facebook page here).

“The cool thing about the flag is it’s the first pizza art I made,” said Palmieri. “And it’s relatively easy. With some of the other special orders, it takes a little bit more time. I can easily make a bunch of these.”

The Palmieri baking tradition goes back over 100 years.  In 1905, Domenico Palmieri opened a small neighborhood bakery on Ledge Street in Providence. The bakery then branched out to its Federal Hill location.

Domenico’s grandson Domenic then decided to take a chance in opening up his own bakery with not much more than a bag of flour and borrowed start-up funds to open D. Palmieri’s at its current location in Johnston.

And now? D. Palmieri’s ships across the country.

“When Domenic first opened the business over 36 years ago, he sold mostly to neighbors who would walk there,” says the bakery on its website. “Today our customer base spans the globe with orders being shipped as far away as Las Vegas, California and Florida and is a testament to what hard work and tradition will bring.”
