About the Summer Safety Slam

The Summer Safety Slam is an event that brings local police departments, residents, and community-based organizations together to promote partnership, crime prevention and neighborhood camaraderie. This year, our Summer Safety Slam is going to be SUPER with superhero-themed bounce house and a screening of Black Panther in the park!

In light of recent incidents at Joslin Park, we hope to provide community members an opportunity to come out and reclaim our parks. While this one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs, and violence, the Summer Safety Slam represents the kind of spirit, energy and determination that makes our neighborhood a safer place year-round. At this event, children and their families have the unique opportunity to engage with Providence police officers and officers in training, to get to know them as individuals beyond the uniform. Together, officers and families form partnerships and challenge each other with healthy competition through lively, athletic competitions and activities. The Slam also promotes community resources, with vendors from over 25 agencies and the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) who will highlight how to access affordable and healthy food, after-school programs for children, health screenings and much more. The Slam offers free, healthy food, replacing all soda with water, hot dogs and hamburgers with pulled chicken sandwiches from Food4Good, and junk food with fruits donated by Food on the Move. This event is sponsored by the Olneyville Health Equity Zone, which receives support through the Rhode Island Department of Health’s Health Equity Zone initiative.
