The city looking to redevelop and revitalizing the area just north of the highway.

There’s a total of 20 acres the city is asking developers to help revitalize.

The city is calling it the Downtown Gateway Project.

While all sorts of proposals will be accepted, they have to include some type of recreation component, riverfront access, and employment opportunities.

Developers don’t have to tear down the Apex Building, but it is an option on the table.

Just up Main Street, business owners are thrilled to hear something will finally be done with the space

“Very exciting I hope they build housing. I think that’s going to be the biggest thing, bring people in to actually live in Pawtucket and then when people live here they’ll actually be part of the local economy so I think that’ll be cool,” Christopher Aubin at Seed Cafe said.

“I have two kids, two little ones and they would love the splash park,” Glenda Pagan at Key Treats said.

“I would like to see us have that for outdoor entertainment, events, pop ups, maybe some carnivals, maybe some more stores,” Theresa Snead at Green on Main added.

They all agree more people in the area can only be beneficial.

“The foot traffic would be amazing,” Pagan said.

“I think that would be excellent for business,” said Snead.

Proposals are due in September.
