Attorney General Neronha to Host 21st Annual Open Government Summit

Event will be streamed live on www.riag.ri.gov starting at 9 a.m. Friday

This Friday, July 19, 2019, Attorney General Peter Neronha will host the 21st Annual Open Government Summit at Roger Williams University School of Law in Bristol, Rhode Island. The event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (registration begins at 8:30 a.m.) and will also be accessible via live stream.

The Open Government Summit is an annual event and will be the first one led by Attorney General Neronha since he took office in January. Open to both practitioners and members of the public, the event is an opportunity to learn about the Access to Public Records Act (APRA) and the Open Meetings Act (OMA) and receive practical guidance on how to comply with these statutes in various situations.

“When government decisions are debated in public and made open to inspection, the result is a more engaged citizenry that is invested in its community,” said Attorney General Neronha. “Through this summit, our goal is to provide practitioners with the tools they need to effectively operate in accordance with the Access to Public Records Act and the Open Meetings Act, understanding that these decisions often call for discretion.”

The Open Government Summit is free and open to the public. In addition to presentations on the APRA and OMA, as well as applicable recent findings, this year’s summit will feature opening remarks by Attorney General Neronha and representatives from the New England First Amendment Coalition, one of Rhode Island’s most ardent advocates for open government.

Seating capacity is limited and on a first come, first serve basis. Anyone interested in attending can register by emailing agsummit@riag.ri.gov or calling 401-274-4400, ext. 2101. Please include name, bar number, entity represented (if applicable), and a contact phone number and email.

Questions that attendees would like addressed at the summit can be submitted in advance when registering for the event or by sending to agsummit@riag.ri.gov.
