Project BioShield Evolution: 15 Years of Bridging the ‘Valley of Death’ in the Medical Countermeasures Pipeline

Fifteen years ago, Project BioShield was created to enhance this nation’s health security by providing unique authorities and dedicated funds to help us develop and purchase medical countermeasures, especially those with limited commercial value. In the last decade and a half, Project BioShield received appropriations of more than $8.6 billion, and has supported 27 medical countermeasure development and acquisition projects; 15 of those products have been added to the Strategic National Stockpile.
