(WJAR) — A Massachusetts man who was found dead under a home in South Carolina apparently took his own life, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said 60-year-old Stanley Kotowski was on vacation and reported missing from a home on South Sea Pines Drive on Hilton Head Island on Aug. 16.
Since that day, police searched the area and asked residents to help in the search.
The sheriff’s office said at a Tuesday news conference that despite the law effort they were not able to find him.
His body was discovered under a residence on Monday, according to authorities.
During a briefing with the media, it was said he was found four homes down from where he was reported missing.
Authorities finally found his body after someone noticed a foul smell and flies.
Kotowski’s body was found under the home in what authorities said was a unique crawl space.
Police said it was easy to miss as the entrance wasn’t built in a traditional way.
Once below the home, one had to navigate their way to the body, according to the sheriff’s office.
The coroner saidKotowski died from asphyxiation by hanging. It was ruled a suicide.
The limited space under the house was not a factor in the method of death, officials said.
Boston media reported that Kotowski was from Methuen.
