On Aug. 23, Allison King and her son Zach were leaving their Dyer Avenue apartment to go celebrate the birthday of another family member when they were attacked. Both were brought to the hospital.
A witness on scene told police they saw the suspect walk away with a hammer in his hand and enter one of the apartment buildings.
Police set up a perimeter and found 28-year-old Rashad Talley in a nearby building.
“Were you outside when it happened?” officers asked Talley in the footage, to which he responded, “Yeah.”
Officers then asked Talley, “Did you do it?” and he replied, “Of course.”
Talley was immediately arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a child under 10 resulting in serious injury. He is due in court in November.
His brother told officers on scene that Talley suffers from mental health issues.
Allison was treated for a fractured nose, cuts and bruises, and a foot injury, and her unborn child was unharmed, according to a GoFundMe page set up in an effort to offset medical expenses.
Zach underwent surgery to repair a fractured skull and, as of Monday, was still in the pediatric ICU. Doctors are assessing him day by day, trying to manage his pain and keep him comfortable. He will eventually need physical therapy and occupational therapy.
