BOSTON (WPRI) — A police officer in Boston is recovering after he was struck by a construction vehicle Thursday afternoon.
Scott Hartmann, who is blind, now wants to thank that officer for saving his life. He thinks it could have been him who was hit by that truck had the officer not helped him.
Police say the officer was working construction detail and was helping the truck make a turn around 12:15 p.m. when Hartmann tried to cross the intersection.
The officer stopped the truck to let Hartmann pass, police said, when the truck’s back gate swung open and hit him.
Hartmann told police the driver said he forgot to secure the latch.
“I’ve had some close calls being blind and stuff, but nothing ever this close before where somebody was harmed trying to help me. I feel awful about it,” Hartmann said. “If you are watching this, thank you for saving my life today.”
The officer was transported to the hospital where he is recovering from serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say the driver is cooperating but its too early to say if they will face any charges.
