Central Falls Man Sentenced for Molesting Young Girl

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that Carlos Rivera (age 52), of Central Falls, was sentenced Thursday by Superior Court Justice Brian P. Stern to 50 years, with 30 years to serve and the remainder suspended with probation, for the molestation of a young girl.

In addition, Rivera was ordered to have no contact with the victim, ordered to undergo sex offender counseling, and is subject to lifetime sex offender registration and community notification upon his release.

In June, Rivera was convicted of one count of first degree child molestation and two counts of second degree child molestation by a Providence County Superior Court jury presided over by Justice Stern.

During the trial, the State proved that on or about dates between July 18, 2013 and July 17, 2015, the defendant sexually molested an 11-year-old girl known to him. The victim reported the abuse to her pediatrician, who in turn contacted the Department of Children, Youth and Families.

In addition to the victim testifying at trial to the multiple instances of molestation by the defendant, Dr. Christine Barron and Dr. Amy Goldberg, both of the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Aubin Center, testified to the two medical examinations of the victim and the physical findings that indicated penetrative trauma.

“It took great courage for this young girl to disclose her abuse to members of law enforcement, after which healthcare professionals, law enforcement and child advocates were able to provide her with the support she needed to face her abuser in court and put him behind bars,” said Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin.

Special Assistant Attorneys General Laura Nicholson and Lauren Iannelli prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of Attorney General.
