City Buildings Will Be Closed Tomorrow and Trash Pick-Up Will Resume Next Week Following Clean-Up Efforts After Largest Snowfall in Providence’s History
Providence, RI — Mayor Brett P. Smiley today announced that curbside trash pick-up is being suspended through the rest of the week following yesterday’s historic blizzard. Normal trash pick-up services impede effective snow removal efforts and suspending these services through the week will ensure the City’s trucks can effectively make Providence’s roads safe and accessible in every neighborhood. Trash pick-up will resume next week on Monday, March 2 on the normal trash pick-up schedule.
“This has been a difficult winter for our entire community. We are working around the clock to clear roads in every neighborhood after the most severe storm in Providence’s history so that our neighbors can get to work and our city can get back to normal,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “Like many other communities in Rhode Island, we are suspending curbside trash-pick for the rest of this week to help our trucks plow curb to curb and ensure pick-up resumes as usual on Monday. To help ease the burden this places on our neighbors we are providing no-cost overflow bags at City Hall and 75 Chapman Street starting on Thursday morning.
Providence remains in a citywide parking ban. During this period parking is prohibited on all snow routes and city streets to allow snowplows to clear roadways effectively. The ban will remain in effect until further notice, and violators may be subject to ticketing and towing. During a parking ban, residents, including those with an overnight parking permit, are not allowed to park on city streets. Parking in Providence Public School parking lots is prohibited during a parking ban.
Overnight permit holders will now be able to park at one of sixteen approved locations citywide. If there is not an approved location nearby, residents can use another approved site, including on-street locations adjacent to city parks, parking lots within city parks and select on-street locations on particularly wide streets.
Permit holders can move their vehicle to an approved location once a snow parking ban is announced. After the ban is lifted, residents have eight hours to move their vehicle from the approved location. Vehicles left past this grace period may be ticketed or towed to allow city plows to clear streets efficiently.
The City and PEMA recommend all residents stay indoors when possible and limit exposure to the cold and wind. To assist residents affected by the cold temperatures, warming centers will be open to the public. For a full list of warming centers, visit www.providenceri.gov/
