Councilors Approve $5.75 Million in Community Funds for Immediate Neighborhood Needs
Providence, RI – Tonight, City Councilors passed an ordinance enabling $5.755 million in federal community development block grant funding (CDGB) to have an immediate impact on Providence’s neighborhoods. The funding helps support community centers and public service programs across the city. Public service grants will also assist folks with unemployment and homelessness, clothing, music education, and domestic violence resources. CDGB funds were thoroughly reviewed by the council’s Committee on Urban Redevelopment Renewal and Planning (URRP), chaired by Deputy Majority Leader Mary Kay Harris (Ward 11).

National Gun Violence Awareness Day
A resolution sponsored by Councilwoman Shelley Peterson (Ward 14) was passed, declaring the first Friday in June, June 2, 2023 to be National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Every day, more than 120 Americans are killed by gun violence, and more than 200 are shot and wounded, with an average of more than 17,000 gun homicides every year. In January 2013, Hadiya Pendleton was tragically shot and killed at 15 years old. June 2, 2023 will recognize the 26th birthday of Pendleton (born: June 2, 1997) and people across the United States will recognize National Gun Violence Awareness Day by wearing orange in tribute to Pendleton, other victims of gun violence, and loved ones of those victims.
