Cranston man sentenced to 30 years for child molestation

Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced that Robert Barboza (age 50) of Cranston was sentenced on June 3, 2019 to 30 years after being found guilty of one count of second-degree child molestation. Superior Court Justice Netti C. Vogel sentenced Barboza to a 30-year full sentence, with 18 years to serve at the ACI and the balance suspended with probation. Additionally, a no contact order was issued with the victim and Barboza is to undergo sex offend er counseling and is required to register as a sex offender.

Barboza was found guilty earlier this year by a Providence Superior Court jury on January 23, 2019. At the conclusion of the trial, Barboza was held in contempt by the Court because of his conduct during the State’s closing arguments and was sentenced to six months to serve at the ACI. Barboza’s 30-year sentence will be served consecutively to his six-month sentence for contempt.

During the trial, the State proved beyond a reasonable doubt that between September 1, 2012 and June 30, 2012, Barboza molested an eight-year-old girl who was known to him.

Detective Michael Iacone of the Cranston Police Department led the investigation and Special Assistant Attorneys General Siobhan Bogosian and Bethany Laskowski prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General.
