The Artistic Legacy of Alfonso Acevedo: A Journey from Colombia to Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — In a recent 12 Informa interview, artist and photographer Alfonso Acevedo shared his inspiring journey from Colombia to the U.S., where he became Rhode Island’s first Latino wedding and event photographer. Overcoming language barriers and limited opportunities, Acevedo has used his art to celebrate and document Latino culture. His volunteer work at Adams Library, where he’s offered free art classes for Spanish-speaking children since 1987, highlights his dedication to empowering young Latinos through creativity.

Acevedo also reflected on his passion for painting, sharing milestones like his 1988 exhibition at Adams Library, the first Latino-led show in that space. Despite working without pay, his commitment to community-driven art remains strong, as he continues to organize classes and exhibitions. The interview showcased Acevedo’s impact on the art world and his role in strengthening the Latino community in Rhode Island.
