FDA Announces Recall of Apple Juice in 28 States Due to Potential Mold Contamination

A single lot of 10-ounce glass bottles of Martinelli’s Apple Juice (sold in four-packs) may contain elevated levels of patulin, a naturally occurring mycotoxin produced by mold and fungus that may be present in apples. Long-term exposure to patulin can cause nausea, gastrointestinal issues, vomiting, and other side effects.

While S. Martinelli & Company originally issued the voluntary recall on March 18, the FDA posted the Class II classification notice on April 22. A Class II recall is the second most severe type of recall, indicating that the product may cause “temporary” or “reversible” health consequences.

How To Identify the Recalled Apple Juice

The recalled juice was sold in four-packs of round, clear glass 10-ounce bottles with white metal screw top lids. It can be further identified with the following information:

Affected cases were distributed to stores in 28 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

What To Do if You Have the Recalled Apple Juice

While the FDA doesn’t list specific instructions, it is typically advised that if you have the recalled Martinelli’s Apple Juice, you should not consume it.
