The Federal Hill restaurant, known for its expansive craft beer selection, voluntarily surrendered its liquor license and related licensing privileges on Aug. 26, according to documents filed with the Providence Board of Licenses.

The restaurant’s sudden closure was first reported Thursday by The Boston Globe.

It’s unclear exactly when or why the Atwells Avenue restaurant closed. The restaurant’s number automatically redirects to the neighboring Providence Oyster Bar, and its website also diverts to the nearby Providence Burger Bar.

Federal Hill Taphouse & Kitchen, Providence Oyster Bar and Providence Burger Bar are owned by Atwells Group Hospitality Management.

Rick Simone, president of the Federal Hill Commerce Association, wouldn’t speculate as to why the restaurant closed.

“Federal Hill is maintaining an over 90% occupancy rate for our business locations,” he said in a statement. “We are disappointed to see the Federal Hill Taphouse close, however, we know that this desirable location will not remain vacant for very long.”
