Fighting the COVID-19 Omicron Variant

As of December 20, 2021, the COVID-19 Omicron variant has been detected in most states and territories and is rapidly increasing the proportion of COVID-19 cases it is causing. We have the tools to fight Omicron.

Vaccines remain the best public health measure to protect people from COVID-19, slow transmission, and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging.

CDC has updated its recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines with a preference for people to receive an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna). Everyone 5 years and older is now eligible to get a free COVID-19 vaccination.

Masks offer protection against all variants. CDC continues to recommend wearing a mask in public indoor settings in areas of substantial or high community transmission, regardless of vaccination status.

Tests can tell you if you are currently infected with COVID-19. Rapid tests, including self-tests, can be performed in minutes. Laboratory tests can take days to complete.
