TEATRO ECAS CELEBRATES FRANCIS PARRA’S RECOGNITION AS A 2026 RHODE ISLAND PELL AWARD HONOREE

PROVIDENCE, RI — The Board of Directors, staff, artists, volunteers, students, and supporters of Teatro ECAS proudly celebrate the selection of Founder and Artistic Executive Director Francis Parra as a recipient of the 2026 Rhode Island Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts.

This recognition honors more than an individual achievement. It celebrates nearly three decades of artistic vision, cultural leadership, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that Latino stories, voices, and experiences have a place on Rhode Island’s stages and in the broader cultural conversation.

“¡Qué orgullo!” For the Latino community, for the generations of artists who have found a home at Teatro ECAS, and for the thousands of audience members whose lives have been touched through theater, this recognition is deeply meaningful.

Founded in 1997, Teatro ECAS began with a simple but powerful belief: that theater can educate, inspire, preserve culture, and bring communities together. What started as a traveling theater company performing in schools, libraries, community centers, and borrowed theater spaces has grown into New England’s premier Spanish-language repertory theater company and a respected cultural institution.

One of Francis Parra’s most enduring contributions has been her commitment to making theater accessible to all. While Teatro ECAS proudly presents its productions in Spanish, the organization also offers English subtitles, allowing audiences from diverse backgrounds to experience Latino stories, traditions, history, humor, and perspectives. This approach reflects Francis’ belief that theater should not only preserve culture but also create opportunities for cultural exchange, understanding, and connection. Through this vision, Teatro ECAS has welcomed thousands of audience members who may not speak Spanish but who leave with a deeper appreciation of our language, our heritage, and our shared humanity.

For nearly 30 years, Francis has served as director, educator, mentor, advocate, and community builder. Through theatrical productions, educational programs, youth development initiatives, cultural festivals, and international artistic collaborations, she has created opportunities for countless individuals to discover their voices, celebrate their identities, and experience the transformative power of the arts.

The Teatro ECAS family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Trinity Repertory Company, the Pell Awards selection committee, and all those who continue to recognize the vital role that arts and culture play in strengthening our communities. We are honored that Francis’ work and the work of Teatro ECAS have been acknowledged alongside some of Rhode Island’s most distinguished artists and cultural leaders.

“Gracias de corazón.” Thank you for honoring a woman whose work has never been about personal recognition, but about opening doors for others, nurturing artistic talent, preserving cultural traditions, and ensuring that future generations can see themselves reflected on stage.

As Teatro ECAS approaches its 30th anniversary, this recognition serves as a reminder of what is possible when passion, perseverance, and purpose come together in service to a community. Francis Parra’s legacy is measured not only in productions presented or awards received, but in the lives she has inspired, the artists she has mentored, and the cultural bridges she has helped build.

Today, we celebrate Francis Parra. We celebrate the arts. We celebrate the stories that connect us. And we celebrate the belief that through theater, we can better understand one another and the world we share.

¡Felicidades, Francis! Este reconocimiento es más que merecido.
