PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence police arrested a man who pulled a knife on a police patrolman while being escorted out of The Miriam Hospital early Tuesday morning.
According to police, Damien Kilgore, 34, was being escorted out of the hospital around 1 a.m. for acting “unruly” when he took out a knife with a four-inch blade.
The officer then drew his firearm and ordered Kilgore to drop the knife, but Kilgore refused to comply and ran away.
A Lifespan spokesperson told Target 12 prior to the incident on Tuesday, the hospital group hired Providence Police Department detail for “added security.”
“We would like to thank the Providence Police Department and hospital security for their quick response and dedication to keeping everyone safe,” a spokesperson said.
Police said Kilgore was later apprehended not far from the hospital at a Speedway gas station on North Main Street.
Kilgore is being charged with felony assault, resisting arrest and having weapons other than firearms prohibited.
Online court records show Kilgore was arraigned and no plea was entered. A judge ordered him to undergo a competency evaluation.
Kilgore was presented as a violator for two previous drug possession cases on Tuesday afternoon. A judge ordered him held without bail and he was remanded to the Adult Correctional Institutions.
The 34-year-old has a lengthy criminal history. Online court records show Kilgore has previously been charged with larceny, conspiracy, drug possession, trespassing and disorderly conduct.
