Managing Stress During the Holidays

Holidays can be a stressful time. Try some of these tips to manage seasonal stressors to protect your mental and physical health.

Prepare for stressful events like hard conversations:

  • Picture what the room will look like and what you’ll say
  • Think about different ways the conversation could go and how you could respond
  • Have a plan for ending the conversation early if you need time to think

Make time for self-care:

  • Relax with deep breathing or meditation
  • Relax your muscles by stretching or taking a hot shower
  • Exercise
  • Eat healthy
  • Talk to friends

PSA and Prostate Health

A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test measures the level of PSA in your blood. PSA is a substance made by the prostate and men normally have low PSA levels in their blood. A high PSA level may be a sign of prostate cancer, the most common non-skin cancer affecting American men. But high PSA levels can also mean noncancerous prostate conditions, such as infection or benign prostatic hyperplasia, a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate. Learn more about prostate health and what the results of a PSA test mean.

Statins to Lower Cholesterol

If diet and exercise don’t reduce your cholesterol levels, you may need to take cholesterol medicine. Often, this medicine is a statin. Statins interfere with the production of cholesterol in your liver. They lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels which can slow the formation of plaques in your arteries. Learn about statins and how they work.
