The Showcase Cinemas off Route 6 in Seekonk is set to close and be replaced by a Market Basket, the town planner confirmed to 12 News.

Demoulas Super Markets Inc., which owns the grocery store chain, purchased the property earlier this year.

Showcase Cinemas said the Seekonk theater’s last day of operations will be Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025.

“We encourage our cinema patrons and Starpass loyalty members to visit our other nearby locations at Showcase Cinema de Lux Providence Place and Showcase Cinema de Lux North Attleboro,” a statement from the company read.

According to filings from the company, the proposed plan is to redevelop the property with several retail buildings. The largest building will be Market Basket and the two smaller buildings have not been determined.

Although the document mostly focuses on construction plans and considerations of the environment, it also offers insight into the company’s interest in the site.

“No offsite alternatives were considered as the redevelopment of this site as this premier location provides the best reuse of the property while minimizing the impacts to the environment commonly associated with the development of previously unaltered land,” the filing read. “Moreover, Seekonk has identified this site as being within the area of the largest focal point of economic activity in the community and is widely recognized as an indispensable resource for the Town’s tax base.”

There are several Market Baskets in Bristol County, including Attleboro, Fall River, New Bedford, and Raynham. Rhode Island is home to two Market Baskets in Johnston and Warwick.

The Seekonk store will be located beside a Target and down the road from a Walmart, Stop & Shop, and where a new Whole Foods is being built.
