Mayor Elorza Launches Senior Bus Service

City Launches Senior Bus Service available to senior centers and residential facilities at no cost

PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Jorge O. Elorza today announced that the City launched a dedicated charter bus service available to senior centers and residential facilities at no cost. The bus service will allow organizations and facility managers to schedule group bus trips to shopping centers, supermarkets, restaurants and other destinations within an hour’s drive of Providence. The bus service will be available to senior Providence residents and participating residential facilities only at this time and reservations must be made with the City in advance.

“We’re excited to help seniors stay connected with their community,” said Mayor Jorge O. Elorza. “With the dedicated bus service, seniors will have access to free transportation that will take them to where they need to be.”

The bus was donated to the City by RIPTA last year. The City has since outfitted the vehicle to make it road-ready and hired a dedicated bus driver to operate the bus. Last year, the City contributed more than $73,000 to host dedicated programming for seniors including fitness classes, day trips and contracted programming with Farm Fresh Rhode Island and the RI Community Food Bank.

“We hear often from our seniors that access to transportation has become a growing issue in their community,” said Director of Senior Services Sue Robbio. “This bus service will allow them to explore our city, and beyond our boundaries, together as a community. I’m excited to formally announce this initiative and look forward to future trips with our Providence seniors!”
