A Pawtucket man was indicted for allegedly sexually assaulting a female inmate in the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Framingham.
Police said Joao Gomes, 49, was employed as a corrections officer at the time.
Gomes was charged with four counts of rape and three counts of indecent assault and battery.
According to police, he was also charged with three counts of delivering articles to prisoners and allegedly purchasing underwear for inmates.
Neighbors in Pawtucket said they were surprised to hear of his arrest.
“For someone of that power, that magnitude to do something like that is wild to hear,” said one resident.
An appearance date has not yet been scheduled.
