Police: Man tried to lure kids into woods with drugs

COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — Police arrested a Coventry man accused of trying to lure kids into the woods near an elementary school in town.

Officers were called to East Shore Drive Thursday evening to investigate reports of a man in the woods attempting to give kids drugs.

Police said the man, 63-year-old John Anderson, approached two children and offered them marijuana as they were were walking down a wooded path near Tiogue Elementary School.

The kids ran away from Anderson and immediately told their parents about the strange encounter, according to police.

Anderson was taken into custody and charged with two counts of enticement of children and possession of a controlled substance.

He was granted $2,500 surety bail and ordered not to contact the victims pending a felony screening, which has been scheduled for Aug. 19.
