Prepare for Thanksgiving travel disruptions: Rain, wind and snow across New England

Are you hitting the road for Turkey Day this year? Be ready to give yourself some extra time to get to your destination as an area of low pressure produces widespread precipitation across New England. Here’s what you need to know!

The leading edge of the precipitation shield has arrived, leading to scattered light to moderate rain showers this morning across Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts.

The heaviest precipitation associated with this system is forecast to impact the region as most are getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner. (WJAR)

The intensity will ramp up around noon as pockets of heavy rain move into the region. Some of these embedded downpours will mix gusty winds down to the surfaces, especially for communities south and east of I-95.

No concerns for the inland communities, but it'll be blustery, especially along the coastline. Make sure all holiday decorations are secured. (WJAR)

The worst of the rainfall ends around 3 PM, but it’ll take a few more hours for showers to taper.

Rainfall accumulations from this system will be around 0.5-1.0″ locally. There’s no doubt that Thanksgiving will be wet, but it should be manageable.

Heading up north? It’s going to be a completely different ball game. Once you get into the higher elevations (roughly above 1,000 ft), precipitation will switch to snow, making for slick road conditions. Some of the mountainous regions of ME, NH, and VT.

After Thanksgiving, there should be no weather issues affecting travel. High pressure will bring mostly sunny skies back to the Northeast. The one caveat is the well-below-average temperatures in the forecast as the calendar flips to December.
