Progreso Latino’s vision is a socially and economically thriving Latino and immigrant community that drives solutions to statewide issues. This vision is evident in the agency’s organization of a free plenary comprised of local and regional experts who will examine domestic violence:

  • Carlos Cuevas, Ph.D. is the Co-Director of the Violence Research Laboratory at Northeastern University. His research interests are in the areas of victimization, trauma, sexual violence, sexual offending, family violence and psychological assessment. Professor Cuevas focuses on examining victimization among Latinos and how it relates to psychological distress and service utilization, as well as the role cultural factors play on victimization.

  • ·         Gloria Greenfield is the Director of Immigration Advocacy at Sojourner House. She is part of an organization that is dedicated to promoting healthy relationships by providing culturally sensitive support, advocacy and education, for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence. In addition Sojourner House advocates to effect systems change.

  • Ana Giron serves as Chief of the Victims Services Unit within the Office of the Attorney General of Rhode Island. She oversees the Office’s array of services to felony crime victims and their families.

  • Judelysse Gomez, Ph.D. is the William Meredith Assistant Professor of Psychology at Connecticut College. Her work has focused on examining how variables related to the socio-cultural context such as acculturation, acculturative stress and discrimination, impact the mental/behavioral health and treatment outcomes of individuals of color.

  • Sean Cottrell is Senior Vice President of Starkweather & Shepely Insurance Brokerage Inc. in Rhode Island. He will discuss the role of employers and resources available for employees.

The Pre-Gala Plenary is part of Progreso Latino’s commitment as a non-profit community organization to address the challenges affecting the Latino community in Rhode Island. Progreso Latino also provides responsive programs that include early childhood education, adult education, social services, youth development, senior program, health & wellness and a food pantry. Progreso Latino’s Pre-Gala Plenary is possible due to the generosity of Brown University’s School of Public Health and Starkweather & Shepley Insurance Brokerage, Inc. in Rhode Island.
