Providence bridge replacement closing lanes on I-95

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Two lanes on I-95 South near Exit 34 in Providence will be closed this weekend and the next while crews work to replace the Elmwood Avenue Bridge.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) said the construction will be happening from Sept. 13-16 and Sept. 20-23. The lane closures will start at 8 p.m. on Fridays and all lanes will be reopened by 5 a.m. on Monday.
The high-speed lane on I-95 North will also be closed during those times, along with Elmwood Avenue at the I-95 overpass. Detour signs will be posted for drivers.
There will be a lane split on I-95 South at the bridge, with two lanes on either side of the work zone until Sept. 20. RIDOT said all lanes go through and drivers should not stop or suddenly change lanes.
The Elmwood Avenue Bridge is one of the busiest sections of I-95 and carries 130,000 vehicles per day, according to RIDOT.
Later this fall, RIDOT said it will schedule two more weekend closures for the bridge replacement. The project’s timeline is subject to change depending on circumstances, findings and the weather.
