Providence man charged with 2021 double murder

An indictment, information, or complaint is merely an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced that the statewide Grand Jury returned an indictment charging a Providence man with murder and related assault and firearms counts stemming from a 2021 shooting in Providence.

On May 26, 2023, the Statewide Grand Jury returned a secret indictment charging Kelvin Maldonado (age 30) with two counts of murder, two counts of discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence, one count of conspiracy to commit assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of carrying a pistol without a license, and one count of possession of a firearm after a previous conviction of a crime of violence.

 

At a hearing on June 13, 2023, the secret indictment was unsealed and the defendant was arraigned in Providence County Superior Court.

 

It is alleged that on June 20, 2021, the defendant murdered Abdoulaye Diallo and Abass Mbaye, and fired upon a third male victim.

 

At the arraignment, the defendant was ordered held without bail and remanded to the Adult Correctional Institutions. The defendant is scheduled for a determination of attorney conference on June 21, 2023, in Providence County Superior Court.
