Providence man sentenced to life for murder

Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced that Arnold Evans (age 37), of Providence, pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life at the ACI by Superior Court Justice Kristin E. Rodgers. Evans had been held without bail at the ACI since he was indicted on October 17, 2018 for the murder of Tyrone Williams.

Had the case proceeded to trial, the State was prepared to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that just after midnight on July 1, 2018, Tyrone Williams and a friend parked their car in the area of 189 Gallup Street in Providence and remained in the car to wait for a friend. While waiting, Arnold Evans circled around the back of the car and began firing shots from a 9mm pistol into the front passenger side at Tyrone Williams. Williams climbed over the driver, exited the car and ran. Evans followed him and fired more shots as he pursued him down Gallup Street. Williams collapsed at the intersection of Gallup Street and Gordon Avenue. He was later pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds by the R.I. Office of the State Medical Examiner.

Detective Angelo A’Vant of the Providence Police Department led the investigation and Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan and Assistant Attorney General Daniel Guglielmo prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General.
