They want the city to take back control of the district.

The school board is hoping the change will happen at the end of this upcoming school year.

But the state’s education commissioner and the Department of Education will have the final say.

Two new independent reviews of the state takeover noted progress.

They cite strides in student’s performance in math and resolving issues of chronic absenteeism.

But many parents said they’re concerned about cuts to curriculum, along with student achievement and programming.

The reports echoed these concerns.

The Department of Education said they appreciate the board’s feedback.

The Education Commissioner notes she hasn’t made a decision about when the takeover will end.

“What we want to make sure is that there is no backsliding. That the progress that has been made is maintained,” Angélica Infante-Green said.

RIDE said in a statement there’s still work to be done, and they’re committed to moving Providence Schools forward.
