PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — The city of Providence on Monday kicked off a recruitment drive for the next police academy.
Mayor Brett Smiley and Col. Oscar Perez spoke at an event at the Public Safety Complex soliciting applications for the 73rd Providence Police Department Training Academy.
“The Providence Police Department is committed to building a diverse and dedicated force that truly represents the community we serve. This recruitment drive is an opportunity for individuals with a strong sense of duty, integrity, and a desire to make a difference to join our ranks,” Perez said in a statement. “We’re looking for people who want to be part of something bigger than themselves, who value teamwork, and who are ready to take on the responsibility of keeping our city safe.”
A Providence police open house will be held Oct. 5.
Smiley said there is room for 40 recruits in the next academy, which will begin next year.
When asked how many officers the department needs to be considered fully staffed, Smiley said he couldn’t put a number on it because the workforce is in constant churn with turnover and retirements.
Applications will be available on the Providence Police Department website. Applications can be submitted until the end of November.
The Providence Police Department swore in 34 new officers less than a month ago.
