R.I. Small Business Update

The Rhode Island Commerce Corporation recently held a conference exploring Rhode Island’s Opportunity Zones and their potential benefit for the Ocean State.
There were more than 200 attendees, ranging from local municipalities, non-profit organizations and anchor institutions, to banks and credit unions and developers.
Highlights include analysis and insight from local and national experts; Rhode Island updates from Secretary Stefan Pryor, Department of Business Regulation Director Liz Tanner, and Treasurer Seth Magaziner; as well as a panel featuring investors, developers, and nonprofit partners.

The company recently leveraged CommerceRI’s Innovation Voucher Program for a research and development partnership with New England Institute of Technology.

Governor Raimondo Announces STEAM Month in Rhode Island
STEAM Month highlights the work Rhode Island is currently doing to support STEAM education and economic development. CS4RI
Thanks to Governor Raimondo, Rhode Island has launched STEAM initiatives including:
  • CS4RI, which made Rhode Island the first state in the nation to offer computer science in every public school
  • PrepareRI, which offers advanced coursework and paid internships in STEAM fields to high school students, including the PrepareRI Youth Apprenticeship Program.
  • Middle School Career Exploration Grants, which allow middle school students to explore STEAM curriculum
  • Wavemaker Fellowship, which provides loan forgiveness to recent college graduates in STEAM fields
  • P-TECH, which allows students to get hands-on job training in high-growth fields, such as STEAM, and graduate with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree
As part of the STEAM Month celebration, Commerce Secretary Stefan Pryor met with Wavemaker Fellows at Apponaug Brewing Company.
