The scheme involved National Grid’s energy efficiency program, for which they are paid an incentive for meeting energy savings goals. These incentives are capped to a certain amount, so employees circumvented the caps by delaying invoice submissions when targets were met.

The $8 million will be placed in a fund that covers the costs reaped by storm damages to the energy grid.

This is in addition to the $2.4 million that National Grid refunded to the state energy efficiency fund in 2022 following a preliminary investigation into the scheme.

Although, the misconduct did not happen under RI Energy’s ownership, they agreed to resolve the issue.
