Rhode Island Preservation Conference

THE STATEWIDE ADVOCATE FOR RHODE ISLAND’S HISTORIC PLACES
Every April, Preserve Rhode Island looks forward to the Annual Rhode Island Statewide Historic Preservation Conference hosted by the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission. We visit another Rhode Island community, get to know its historic places, preservation projects, and local leaders. We enjoy hearing from an expert keynote speaker, touring historic sites, and connecting with friends new and old.

This year, the Rhode Island Preservation Conference packs some extra punch as it joins with the national group Latinos in Heritage Conservation! The combined conference is Encuentro 2018.

On Saturday April 28, we are looking forward to hearing from Dr. Ray Rast (Gonzaga University) about Latino preservation advocacy and activism. The speech is followed by two dozen tours of local Latino neighborhoods, recent preservation projects, public art, and historic places associated with underrepresented communities, such as Downtown’s Chinatown, African American College Hill, Pond Street, LGBTQ Providence, and more.

And there are great opportunities to hear from Latino preservation leaders from around the country onThursday and Friday, April 26-27. Sessions will explore murals as history and the national state of historic preservation in underrepresented communities.

PRI is pleased to support and take part in this landmark gathering of preservationists, scholars, students, design professionals, and community advocates. Our program manager Susanna Prull will be one of the leaders of tours along Broad Street, Providence’s Latino cultural corridor. Join her and many other leaders for a day celebrating and exploring Providence’s heritage, arts and culture!

Sign up today! Registration ends on April 17.

Warm wishes,
