PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Electrical work began Tuesday night for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s (RIDOT) installation of new technology to monitor the structural health of the Washington Bridge.

Exit 1A closed at 7 p.m., along with the two rightmost lanes of the Washington Bridge. The ramp to South Main Street shut down at 9 p.m.

With drivers raising concerns about increased traffic on the eastbound bridge and its ability to handle the extra weight, RIDOT is implementing the new system as a precautionary measure.

Kistler, a Swiss family-owned technology company, will install their Digital Weigh In Motion (WIM) system, which weighs trucks in real-time at any speed.

RIDOT emphasizes that, although the eastbound side of the bridge has not experienced any issues, the WIM system will ensure it remains structurally sound.

RIDOT notes that, while similar systems have been used in past construction projects for traffic management, Kistler’s system will provide real-time updates if any issues are detected. It will not be used to track speeds or set up a future toll, which are some concerns drivers have expressed.

“I guess there’s privacy concerns, but as long as like it’s helping the bridge not collapse like I’m happy with anything,” East Providence resident Desiree Delande said.

RIDOT expects the system to be fully installed by the end of the month.
