“We simply can’t sit by. But I think the best approach for the United States is the approach of sanctions, both on individuals and also on institutions. And I think that’s something that will be considered seriously,” Reed told reporters.

Reed, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said crews on U.S. Navy destroyers were able to relay targeting information on Iran’s missiles to Israeli forces to help them shoot down missiles headed into Israel.

Now, the question is what comes next in terms of Israel’s response.

“The question, I think, is a response that is proportional and does not generate an all-out unconstrained exchange of weapons and attacks by both sides, all sides,” Reed said. “The posture the United States is maintaining in the region is to prevent escalation. And, to date, we have done so. This is another challenge to that escalation policy. The United States, I think, will consider in discussions not just with Israel, but with the whole Middle East community, possible sanctions against Iran.”

Reed said he does not see a scenario at this point in which the U.S. would send more forces to the region
