Sexually Transmitted Diseases

There are more than 20 types of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Antibiotics can treat STDs caused by bacteria, yeast, or parasites. There is no cure for STDs caused by a virus, but medicines can often help keep the disease under control. Correct usage of latex condoms greatly reduces the risk of catching or spreading STDs. The most reliable way to avoid infection is to not engage in sexually activity.

Assisted Living

If you need help with daily care, but you don’t require the intensive medical and nursing care provided in nursing homes, then assisted living may meet your needs. Assisted living facilities may be part of a retirement community, nursing home, or senior housing complex, or may stand-alone. Health and long-term care insurance policies may cover some of the costs. Medicare does not cover the costs of assisted living. Learn more about assisted living.

What Causes a Stroke?

A stroke happens when a blood clot (embolism) travels from another part of the body and lodges within an artery in the brain, causing a loss of blood flow to part of the brain. If this happens, brain cells cannot get the oxygen and nutrients they need, and they start to die within a few minutes. A stroke can cause lasting brain damage, long-term disability, or even death. This 49 second video explains the causes of stroke.

Chapped Lips

Your lips don’t have oil glands like other parts of your skin, making them susceptible to dryness. Cold, dry weather and licking your lips can also cause them to become chapped. Learn how to prevent chapped lips.

Is Whey Protein Way Overrated?

Whey protein is the protein contained in whey, the watery portion of milk that separates from the curds when making cheese. It is commonly used for improving athletic performance and increasing strength, but evidence to support these uses is mixed. Whey protein is also used to reverse weight loss in people with HIV and to help prevent allergic conditions in infants. Learn more about its effectiveness and interactions with medications.
