Cranston Police Major Todd Patalano said they got a report of shoplifting around 5:15 p.m. at a store in Garden City Shopping Center.

About five minutes later, an officer found the suspect vehicle at a red light on Reservoir Avenue, near the on-ramp to Route 10 in Providence.

A Cranston officer approached the car on foot, opened the driver’s door and told the two people inside to get out.

According to police, the man who was driving didn’t listen, while the female in the passenger seat told the man to drive away.

The driver allegedly ran over the officer’s foot, who then fired off one shot from her gun in response.

Police said the driver continued onto Route 10 North. They were last seen around Niantic Avenue and have not yet been caught.

The officer was treated at the hospital and has since been released.

Police said the suspect vehicle is registered with Massachusetts.
