TF Green to undergo $64 million terminal renovation
WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island’s T.F. Green International Airport is set to undergo $64 million in terminal upgrades, but some local fliers are concerned it may come at the cost of the ground floor’s iconic sailboat installation.

Last week, the board of directors selected a construction firm to complete the project, which will be funded through a combination of federal grants, passenger fees and airport funds, according to Bill Fischer, a spokesperson for the RIAC. He emphasized that no Rhode Island taxpayer dollars are being used.
Fischer said the next phase focuses on “modernizing the terminal to better accommodate growing passenger traffic,” including improvements to walls, ceilings, seating and lighting.
RIAC considers the upgrades long overdue, noting the terminal hasn’t been renovated in three decades. However, others are concerned about the fate of the familiar sailboat inside, which has long welcomed travelers home and introduced tourists to the Ocean State.
“For years, this sailboat has welcomed visitors with a symbol of our state’s rich maritime heritage and deep connection to the sea,” one viewer wrote to 12 News. “It is more than a decorative piece. It is a recognizable emblem that communicates the character and culture of Rhode Island from the moment travelers arrive.”
The viewer added that removing the sailboat would be a disservice to Rhode Island’s identity, urging RIAC to reconsider or find another option to preserve it.
“At a time when first impressions are more important than ever, especially for visitors and returning Rhode Islanders, keeping this familiar symbol helps reinforce a sense of place and pride,” the viewer continued.
Fischer told 12 News the sailboat may need to be relocated as the project begins, though discussions about its future “remain ongoing and are at this point premature.” He said RIAC will be ready for further discussions once the plans are finalized.
Previous renovations at T.F. Green have included new restrooms, lounges, flooring, along with updated concessions and a loudspeaker system.
