Wayward cat causes highway traffic jam

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Traffic was briefly brought to a standstill on I-195 East in Providence Thursday evening — but it wasn’t caused by the Washington Bridge closure.

It turns out Rhode Island State Police troopers were scrambling to try and catch a wayward cat who made her way onto the highway.

Troopers and drivers were seen on a Rhode Island Department of Transportation camera stopping cars from passing in case the cat darted out into oncoming traffic.

The cat kept trying to escape her hiding spot underneath a stopped vehicle, which was surrounded by those trying to catch it. She eventually hopped over a jersey barrier into the westbound lanes and vanished, prompting everyone to disperse and traffic to start flowing again.

Providence Animal Control told 12 News the cat made it off the highway unscathed. Troopers somehow caught the cat and dropped her off at the shelter.

It’s unclear how the cat wound up on the highway.
