Today is a Storm Team 10 Weather Alert for the heavy rain and high wind on the way.

Storm impacts (WJAR)

Storm impacts (WJAR)

Pockets of moderate rain have already developed early this morning, but the intensity of the rainfall will be picking up in time for the morning commute.

A slow drive is likely from ponding and pooling on roadways, along with low visibility from road spray.

However, this is just round one of heavy to torrential bands of rain today.

The flooding threat will continuously increase throughout the day as the rainfall adds up and becomes heavier at times. The Weather Prediction Center has placed much of the region in a slight risk for excessive rainfall, with a widespread 1-3″+ expected. Typical with long-duration events, there will likely be places that overachieve and may see upwards of 4-5″ of rainfall.

High-end models suggest those higher bands of rain could land in western Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Be sure to have a way to receive potential alerts and NEVER drive through floodwaters. Storm Team 10 meteorologist A.J. Mastrangelo has more on the fresh and saltwater flood threat this morning:

A multifaceted system, strong winds are also forecasted heading into tomorrow afternoon and evening. As a result, the National Weather Service has placed much of our area under a high wind warning.

For those with holiday decorations up, be sure they will be able to withstand tropical storm force winds… or just bring them in to be safe!

Wind gusts start to approach 40 MPH late morning peaking towards 60 MPH as we continue towards late afternoon/dinnertime. Coming right off the nearly frictionless waters of the Atlantic, coastal locations with southerly exposure are expected to see the strongest winds. Power outages will be possible, so be sure to make the necessary preparations today.

Everything winds down late tonight before an improving late week weather picture.

Windy but dry and cool conditions are expected all Thursday, with highs in the 30s Friday into the first half of the weekend.
