What is Low Vision?

Low vision makes it hard to do everyday activities. You may have low vision if you can’t see well enough to do things like:

  • Read
  • Drive
  • Recognize people’s faces
  • Tell colors apart
  • See your television or computer screen clearly

The leading causes of low vision and blindness in the United States are age-related eye diseases: macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma. Other eye disorders, eye injuries, and birth defects can also cause vision loss. Whatever the cause, lost vision cannot be restored. It can, however, be managed. The sooner vision loss or eye disease is found and treated, the greater your chances of keeping your remaining vision. Learn more about vision loss.

High Blood Pressure in Black Americans

More than 40 percent of non-Hispanic African American men and women have high blood pressure. For African-Americans, high blood pressure also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe. Many people don’t know they have it, because there are usually no warning signs. This can be dangerous, because high blood pressure can lead to life-threatening conditions like heart attack or stroke. The good news is that you can often prevent or treat high blood pressure. Early diagnosis and heart-healthy lifestyle changes can keep high blood pressure from seriously damaging your health.

Kidney Stones (Video)

Each year, more than one million people in the U.S. are seen in emergency rooms with pain caused by kidney stones. Stones vary in size from tiny crystals that can only be seen with a microscope to over an inch wide. Tiny stones may pass out of your body without you noticing them, but with larger stones, you probably won’t be so lucky. Stones that are larger than a pencil eraser can get stuck in the urinary tract—and that can really hurt.

Signs of kidney stones may include:

  • Extreme pain in your back or side that will not go away
  • Blood in your urine
  • Fever and chills
  • Vomiting
  • Urine that smells bad or looks cloudy
  • A burning feeling when you urinate

This short video explains the urinary tract and the causes and complications of kidney stones.

Financial Problems Can Be Sign of Dementia

A new study found that financial problems can be an early sign of dementia. Dementia causes changes to the brain that can interfere with daily life including the ability to manage bills and other finances. Researchers examined medical and credit information from about 80,000 adults who were 65 and older, lived alone, and received healthcare through Medicare. They found that problems can begin as early as six years prior to diagnosis. Read more.
