“Don’t tell me what happened, show me what happened”: Equipping police with body-worn cameras
Last Wednesday, Rhode Island leaders announced a collaborative, statewide program to fund body-worn cameras for uniformed police officers. The program will equip approximately 1,700 officers across every police department and the Rhode Island State Police with body-worn cameras following an initial rollout period of 12-18 months.
The Office of the Attorney General began working closely with the R.I. Police Chiefs’ Association and the R.I. State Police to develop the plan last fall, and our Office has since committed $1 million toward the program in order to ensure a sustainable future for the deployment of these cameras. Proposed enabling legislation also provides for the creation of statewide policies to ensure the cameras are used in an effective and transparent manner.
Working to ensure the future of two Rhode Island hospitals
Earlier this month, Attorney General Neronha conditionally approved the sale of Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital with unprecedented financial conditions. To secure approval, the hospitals’ owner, Prospect Medical Holdings, and its private-equity firm parent, Leonard Green, agreed to place $80 million in escrow to secure a 5-year future for the two hospitals. The conditional approval concludes a year-long review from regulators, and is crucial in protecting the health care that Rhode Islanders continue to receive from these facilities.
“In the end, our conditions in this matter ensure that the communities that depend on Roger Williams and Fatima hospitals — as well as the physicians, nurses and staff providing high quality care — are supported and that there is no disruption of care,” said Attorney General Neronha.
