SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating a crash that backed up traffic on I-295 in Smithfield Friday afternoon.
Rhode Island State Police Lt. David Gormley told 12 News two vehicles were getting onto I-195 South from Route 7, when one slowed to a near stop.
Gormley said the stopped car was rear-ended by the other vehicle. The impact caused both vehicles to slide onto I-295, where they were hit by an oncoming car.
The two vehicles involved in the initial crash burst into flames, according to Gormley. The drivers of both of those cars were brought to the hospital with minor injuries.
The highway was shut down for more than an hour as firefighters knocked down the flames.
No criminal charges or citations have been filed at this time, though Gormley said the crash is still under review.
