City Launches Outdoor Dining Registration for Local Establishments
Outdoor Dining to Resume May 18, Applications Accepted for Additional Expansions
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Mayor Jorge O. Elorza today announced the opening of registration for outdoor dining, aligned with the latest guidance from the Governor allowing for limited operations beginning May 18. As the State continues to implement Phase I guidelines, local businesses are also encouraged to inform Providence’s reopening strategy and rethink how they do business.
“As the Creative Capital, we have been always been defined by our world-class businesses and entrepreneurial community,” said Mayor Jorge. O. Elorza. “Though the impacts of COVID-19 have been drastic, our city has always come together to repair, rebuild and remerge stronger when faced with incredible challenges. As we rethink our path forward, I remain focused on bringing our small businesses the supports they need to remain a part of our community after COVID-19.”
Establishments considering outdoor dining as part of their reopening plans beyond the property adjacent to their establishment including parking lots or spaces, streets or public spaces are encouraged to apply for a no-cost temporary license here. Applications are subject to approval from the Licensing Department in conjunction with Traffic Engineering and Public Safety officials. Plans will need to comply with all guidelines provided by the State, including limiting dining groups to no larger than 5 patrons and table settings at least 8 feet apart.
Additionally, businesses that have already received approval for outdoor dining for this season or have the ability to do outdoor dining on their property, will need to amend their outdoor seating plan to reflect these requirements and provide proof of insurance and additional information for launch on May 18. During this time there will be no entertainment permitted.
The City continues to offer financial supports to its local business community as part of its response to COVID-19. Though the Providence Business Loan Fund relief program, eligible businesses can receive loans starting at $10,000. The City recently also announced the extension of fourth quarter tax deadlines for current tax payers with non-escrowed payments and, through the incoming year’s budget, has proposed that small businesses with tangible personal property assessments under $10,000 will not have to pay tangible taxes this year, pending state approval.
