City of Providence Hosts Native American Heritage Month Celebration

Event at City Hall Pays Tribute to the Rich Ancestry & Traditions of Indigenous Communities

PROVIDENCE R.I. – Mayor Jorge O. Elorza joined members of the Providence Human Relations Commission (PHRC) along with chiefs and elders from local Nations and communities at Providence City Hall for a celebration in honor of Native American Heritage Month.

“Native American heritage, history and contributions have shaped our city, state and nation,” said Mayor Jorge O. Elorza. “We’re excited to showcase the stories, customs and traditions of local indigenous communities at City Hall for all of our residents. Please join us as we recognize November as Native American Heritage Month in Providence.”

November was first declared National American Indian Heritage Month on August 3, 1990. It’s now commonly referred to as Native American Heritage Month and special events are held across the nation to recognize the legacies of Native people and to educate the general public about tribes and the challenges they have faced historically, as well as their successes and contributions.

The free event included an official proclamation signing ceremony and a performance by the Eastern Medicine Singers that paid tribute to the rich ancestry and traditions of indigenous communities across the Americas.
