Members of Rhode Island’s Italian Heritage Commission described the hill’s “Crime and Cuisine Tour” as detrimental in perpetuating harmful cultural stereotypes.

Italian Chef Walter Potenza said protecting the perception of Italian culture is personal.

“Until the day I die, I will let everybody know, that every time you smear, you stereotype, you defame my culture, I will be there to stop you,” said Potenza.

He serves as President ofRhode Island’s Italian Heritage Commission.

Potenza said he is upset by the growing popularity of walking tours that focus on restaurants with a side of true crime and mob stories.

“If crime is what we like to sell, I’m suggesting there should be other tours that have the words crime and food exploited in other areas around the state, and see if their business association will allow that to happen,” he said.
